The Thieves of Productivity – Juliet Funt

As we celebrate woman’s month, we take some valuable, and much needed advice from Juliet Funt, a global female speaker, influencer, consultant to Fortune 100 companies, and “a warrior in the battle against busyness.” She is a self-proclaimed evangelist for “whitespace”…the strategic pause!

Juliet cautions us to become aware of our productivity thieves which make us very busy, but actually rob us of our productivity. These thieves are deceptive because they both have a value, and a fault. She specifically names four thieves, namely:

  • Drive
  • Excellence
  • Information, and
  • Activity
The Thieves of Productivity

Our natural inclination is to think of these characteristics as being good and being our assets, rather as thieves. But as Juliet explains they can “overgrow their pots” and become our masters:

  • Drive becomes overdrive
  • Excellence becomes perfectionism
  • Information becomes information overload, and
  • Activity becomes frenzy!

She advises that we disarm the thieves by asking four simplifying questions:

  • Is there anything I can let go of?
  • Where is “good enough” good enough?
  • What do I truly need to know?
  • What deserves my attention?

She strongly advises that we frequently step-back and take a strategic pause to reflect on what is truly important and where the best place is to focus our time.

She has great tips to implement more whitespace into our day, so be sure to visit her website and watch her videos for more information about her fight against the “tyranny of the urgent”!
