Mastering Personal Change

At ProjectPro we are in the business of helping you master change. Through training and coaching we believe that you can master change, because change is everywhere, it is inevitable, and it cannot be stopped. A lot of times we harbour fear of the unknown and this paralyses us to face the uncertainty associated with change. A great example of this truth plays out in the mice and humans in Spencer Johnson’s international best seller book “Who moved my cheese”. This book is a very easy read and is probably the definitive text in human behaviour towards change.

In short (and with all credit to Will Chou[1]):

  • The humans and mice live in a maze and have to constantly find cheese to survive.
  • The mice are always vigilant. They’re ready to move on if the cheese disappears. They’re always checking to see if the supply is getting lower.
  • The humans, on the other hand, settle down and slowly get arrogant. They show off their cheese and brag about it. They take it for granted and get stuck in their old ways.

Mastering Change Lessons

If we as individuals want to better deal with change, we would be wise to heed the lessons captured in “Who moved my cheese”. These are

  • Change Happens (your goal / cheese keeps moving)
  • Anticipate Change (be prepared for when the cheese moves)
  • Monitor Change (smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old)
  • Adapt to Change Quickly (the quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy new cheese)
  • Change! (Move with the cheese)
  • Enjoy Change! (Savour the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese!)
  • Be ready to change quickly and enjoy it again (The cheese will move again!)

So ask yourself:

  • Are you Change Literate?
  • Are you improving your skills to better deal with change?
  • Do you know what the Change Economy is expecting of tomorrow’s worker?
