PharoX sculpture to crown Signal Hill

PharoX is an African mega-sculpture, ten storeys high, that speaks to the world about our ancient and contemporary history. The site for erecting the sculpture is on top of Signal Hill, adjacent to the world-renowned Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of the Natural World.

It will be an illuminated  beacon of inspiration at night, to bring people together and will serve as a landmark symbol of hope and innovation for South Africa and the world.

PharoX was conceived by artist Christopher Swift and developed with architect and urban visionary Mokena Makeka as a space for inclusiveness and a shining symbol of possibility. Its features are:

  • A large-scale, lightweight art installation intervention, which  takes the shape of a star tetrahedron, comprising a massive ‘X’ on each of its sides.
  • The structure is clad with the original reclaimed Robben Island Prison Fencing, which at night, is lit by a multitude of energy efficient Pharox™ LED's.
  • It serves as an ideal symbol for the World Design Capital 2014 ICSID ("International Council of Societies of Industrial Design") official signature event.
  • It also serves as a symbol of democracy that marks the 20th year of South Africa as a liberated country.

PharoX has its ancient roots in sacred geometry and represents everything in our reality, as well as the inseparable relationship between two complementary and diverse halves, in the case of South Africa, our past and our future, to form the perfect equilibrium.

The size and purposes of the structure will be determined by both the 12 successful tenders to use its space and the partners that support these tenders. The structure will be a 12-month temporary intervention, split into 12 time capsules. Every month it will be operated and occupied by a new group and can be used in any number of ways: conference venue, exhibition space, theatre platform, educational attraction, entertainment console, concert venue, tourist function or sporting arena. It is only limited by imagination ... and SANPark's safety code, of course.

There are many opportunities for this venue’s use, and according to the World Design Capital 2014 charter, tenders will be graded by their propensity towards transforming lives through design. The categories are limitless: Education, entertainment, communication, architecture, health, technology, arts , language, nature, and social.

It aims to align with the objectives of the World Design Capital 2014 theme, focusing on:

  • bridging historic divides,
  • reconnecting our city in structure and in spirit,
  • rebuilding social and economic inclusion, and
  • repositioning Cape Town for a sustainable future.

The themes are also designed to ignite the imagination of the public, and to contribute towards a greater understanding of the multi-faceted nature of design.

The purpose of PharoX is multi-layered: A lighthouse for possibility; a giant candle of celebration and acknowledgment; a gateway to Africa. In essence it is a project to project inclusiveness and cohesion, for a sustainable and brighter South Africa
