New PDU

PMI’s New PDU Category Structure

The Project Management Institute (PMI) has introduced a new, simplified structure for their Professional Development Units (PDUs) necessary for credential holders to maintain their certification. Research has shown that people did not fully understand the PDU categories and how to appropriately report their PDUs using that structure, so it has been made more user-friendly to better serve the certification holders.

The PDU category update will affect those who hold the following credentials:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)®
  • Program Management Professional (PgMP)®
  • PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)®
  • PMI Risk Management Professional(PMI-RMP)®

If you have earned PDUs and have not yet reported them in the online Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) system, you can still claim them but will have to map them to the new PDU categories.

The restructuring reduces the number of PDU categories from 18 to six. The six new categories are grouped under two divisions—“Education” and “Giving Back to the Profession.”

All categories use the rule that one hour of learning activity is equivalent to one PDU. Categories have been expanded to include Web 2.0 opportunities as well. This includes presenting in podcasts and webinars, or writing a professional blog for an official organization or your company.

There are limits on certain categories in the “Giving Back to the Profession” division to ensure all credential holders pursue project management continuing education as part of maintaining their credential.

You still have a three-year certification cycle in which you should earn and report the required amount of PDUs to renew your credential. The number of PDUs required for credential maintenance and the renewal fee structure also remain the same.
