PMI Announces the Talent Triangle

The Project Management Institute (PMI) has made an important announcement regarding an update of their Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Programme which becomes effective on 1 December 2015. The CCR deals with the recertification of practitioners holding PMI credentials such as CAPM, PMP, PgMP, etc.

The CCR Program was designed to help active PMI certification holders grow and develop with the profession. As the global business environment and project management profession evolves, the program must adapt to provide development of new employer-desired skills. Employers need project practitioners with leadership and business intelligence skills to support long-range strategic objectives that contribute to the bottom line.

The ideal skill set — the PMI Talent Triangle — is a combination of technical, leadership, and strategic and business management expertise. The Talent Triangle should not be confused with the well-known Iron Triangle (Time, Cost and Scope).

The CCR will in future be based on the Talent Triangle comprising:

Technical Project Management

Technical Project Management is the knowledge, skills and behaviours related to specific domains of Project, Program and Portfolio Management. Examples are:

  • Requirements gathering techniques
  • Project controls and scheduling
  • Risk management
  • Scope management
  • Agile tools and techniques
  • Courses which deal with these aspects of advanced project management are ProjectPro’s Program Management course on 9-11 November 2015 and ProjectPro’s Risk Management Professional (course held if sufficient demand).
  • Leadership

    Knowledge, skills and behaviours specific to leadership-oriented skills help an organization achieve its business goals. Examples are:

    • Knowledge, skills and behaviours specific to motivating and guiding others
    • Ability to articulate a vision and guide or influence others to help achieve that objective
    • Negotiation, communication, motivation, problem solving, and conflict resolution

  • Strategic and Business Management.

    Knowledge of, and expertise in, the industry or organization enhances performance and better delivers business outcomes. Examples are:

    • Ability to connect the dots between your work and target organisational strategy to drive project outcomes
    • Understanding of overall business context
    • Product knowledge, industry knowledge,
    • Business acumen, innovation strategy alignment, market strategy alignment, differentiation strategy alignment, customer strategy alignment
    • Finance, marketing, etc.

  • The CCR program will be aligned with the employer-identified skills depicted in the PMI Talent Triangle to ensure PMI certification holders are equipped to remain relevant in a continually changing business environment.
